Following some issues with the booking system (thank you to those people who informed us of this), we are pleased to announce that tickets are once again available for our A27 Portchester design workshops taking place at Portchester School on Tuesday 29th November and Saturday 3rd December.

Join us for a collaborative-design workshop to co-design improvements to the A27. The aim of these workshops will be to address the comments raised at the ‘issues and opportunities’ co-discover stage (stage 1) by designing improvements to help make it easier and safer for everyone to use the A27.

Upcoming A27 Portchester Design Workshops

Please come and join us for a collaborative-design workshop to co-design improvements to the A27. The aim of these workshops will be to address the comments raised at the ‘issues and opportunities’ co-discover stage (stage 1) by designing improvements to help make it easier and safer for everyone to use the A27.

Book a slot at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a27-portchester-design-workshops-tickets-445904070077

** You do not need to attend the whole session. We recommend booking a 30-minute slot to help manage numbers **

The workshops will take place in the Conference Room at Portchester Community School on the following dates/ times:

  • Tuesday 29 November 17:30-19:00
  • Saturday 3 December 10:30-12:00
  • One of the key themes we heard during stage 1 was the need for safer provision for active travel and roundabout upgrades. Improvements for active travel would aim to encourage those that can, to choose to walk or cycle, reducing congestion and traffic pressure for those that need to drive.

This workshop will be run by designers and engineers from Sustrans and Hampshire County Council, using large maps, model kits, and drawing materials, to try out your ideas for improvements. No design experience is necessary, come along to discuss your ideas and help shape the vision for a safer and less congested A27.

These workshops are part of the second stage (stage 2) in the collaborative design process being run by Hampshire County Council, to make improvements to the A27 that encourage those that can, to choose to walk or cycle, reducing congestion and traffic pressure for those that need to drive.

If you are unable to join us on the dates listed, please do send any ideas to engagement.feedback@hants.gov.uk. This can be in the form of text, images/ drawings or any other alternative.

What we found out from our A27 co-discovery events

We have finished reviewing the information that was gathered from the A27 Commonplace, as well as the co-discovery events.

Click the link to read the report in full: A27 Co-discovery engagement report.pdf

    Key findings

  • Respondents reported an overwhelmingly negative (84%) experience of travelling along the A27. This was the same across all modes of transport and the whole section of the road.
  • The most common reasons for this experience were related to cars being driven dangerously and/ or too fast, as well as cyclists not using the available cycle lanes.
  • Comments left on the map were overwhelmingly related to negative feelings. Overall, respondents felt that the whole stretch of the A27 in Portchester was neither cyclist nor pedestrian friendly and there were concerns about high levels of traffic congestion.
  • Poor access for disabled people was raised as a particular issue in Section D (The Fairway to Jubilee Road, including West Street Roundabout) as well as poor surface quality in Section E.*
  • Changes to cycling infrastructure were seen as the most important improvement along the overall route, with separating cyclists from traffic and having better connected, continuous cycling paths being the most common themes for improvement.
  • Respondents also wanted the roads to be safer with requests for better crossings and lower speed limits.
  • Overall, respondents felt that Section E (from Portchester shopping precinct to Hamilton Road including Castle Road Roundabout) should be prioritised for improvements, whether they were walkers, cyclists or drivers.
  • *A breakdown of the A27 sections can be found in the full report.

We will posting details in the upcoming weeks about the second stage of engagement work we are carrying out for this project. Subscribe to recieve email updates on this when available.
